Hallo en welkom bij Schatkist. De podcast om je woordenschat te vergroten.

In the last episode, we covered "please" and "here you are".

This time, we will learn the Dutch words for "thank you" and "you're welcome". Joke is going to say "thank you" as you would say it in a formal situation:

Joke: Dank u.

Es: For more emphasis, you can say:

Joke: Dank u wel.

If you are thanking somebody you know, the u becomes je.

Joke: Dank je. Dank je wel.

If you aren't sure which pronoun to use or if you just like variety, you can say:

J: Bedankt.

To make this stronger, you can say:

J: Hartelijk bedankt. Heel erg bedankt.
After all this thanking, it's time for a "you're welcome" or two.

Joke: Graag gedaan.

Saying "you're welcome" is independent of pronouns or formality so don't worry, just say "graag gedaan" which literally means "done gladly".

Now pretend that that nice lady from the previous podcast has just handed me my keys with a polite "alstublieft".

Es: Dank u wel!

Joke: Graag gedaan.

Now let's imagine that somebody I know quite well has just done something really important for me, such as fixing my computer.

Es: Hartelijk bedankt!

Joke: Graag gedaan.

Now, whenever you visit a Dutch-speaking country, you can thank people with confidence.

Dit was Schatkist. Tot de volgende keer.
