The letter e does not behave quite the same as the other vowels. There are two ways in which it distinguishes itself from the rest:

  1. If the letter e is unstressed, it is pronounced neither long nor short: It is a mute e.
  2. The letter e is the only vowel that is allowed to be doubled at the end of a word.(double ee).
