Components after the right side

It is very common to place something after the right side of the core sentence, especially when you are dealing with long sentence components.

Only the following components can be placed after the right side: Time, manner, place, the indirect object, and the prepositional phrase. This means that a whole bunch of components is not allowed here:

Examples

  • Neuter word order:

Ze hebben vorige week op het Museumplein een openluchtconcert gegeven.
They gave an open-air concert on the Museum Square last week.

Place

  • Placing the place element after the right side:
Left Middle Right .
FF TIME DIROB OV PLACE
Ze hebben vorige week een openluchtconcert gegeven op het Museumplein
They gave an open-air concert on the Museum Square last week.

Time

  • Placing the time element after the right side:
Left Middle Right After
FF PLACE DIROB OV TIME
Ze hebben op het Museumplein een openluchtconcert gegeven vorige week
They gave an open-air concert on the Museum Square last week.

We cannot place the direct object after the right side. "Ze hebben vorige week op het Museumplein gegeven een openluchtconcert", is not possible.

Indirect object

  • Neuter word order:

We hebben een brief aan de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken gestuurd.
We have sent a letter to the minister of foreign affairs.

Prepositional phrase

It is very common to place the prepositional phrase after the right side. The longer the prepositional phrase, the greater the necessity to place it outside the core sentence.

De overheid wil beperkingen aan de verkoop van alcohol en tabak aan minderjarigen opleggen.
The government wants to limit the sales of alcohol and tobacco to underaged persons.
