Today, we will be talking about public holidays, or 'feestdagen' as we call them in Dutch. The idea came from a member on our forum, who sent me a Dutch Christmas song that she recorded herself! Now, this is the kind of spirit -and courage- that I can only admire so we decided to add it to today's show. I do realize we are only in October so to make the song fit into the rest of this episode, I am going to tell you something about the Dutch public holidays. We will conclude this show with the Dutch version of 'Jingle Bells' by our very own forum member EetSmakelijk. [October 7, 2006]

Nederlandse feestdagen [Bieneke] Op 1 januari vieren we het begin van het nieuwe jaar. We noemen dit ook wel nieuwjaarsdag. Op deze dag hoeven de meeste mensen niet te werken. We bezoeken vrienden en familie en we eten de oliebollen en appelflappen die nog over zijn van de avond ervoor. Op 31 december vieren we namelijk oudejaarsavond. In de week voor 'Oud en Nieuw' zie je op straat overal kraampjes met oliebollen en appelflappen. Dit is een typisch Nederlandse lekkernij die op 31 december gegeten wordt. Nou ja, lekker... Laten we zeggen dat het een kwestie van smaak is. Een oliebol is een soort zoete, gefrituurde, luchtige, deegklomp met rozijnen erin. Een appelflap lijkt er een beetje op, maar hier zit dan een schijfje appel in.	Dutch holidays [Bieneke] On the first of January, we celebrate New Year. We also call this New Year's Day. On this day, most people do not have to go to work. We visit friends and family and we eat 'oil dumplings' and 'apple dumplings' that are left from the night before. Because on the 31st of December we celebrate New Year's Eve. In the week before New Year's Eve, you see food stalls everywhere selling oil and apple dumplings. This is a typical tasty Dutch snack. Well, tasty... Let us say that it is a matter of taste. An oil dumpling is a sweet, fried, light lump of dough with raisins in it. An apple dumpling is something similar but this one has a slice of apple inside.
Op oudejaarsavond zitten veel mensen thuis voor de televisie. Op deze avond wordt de oudejaarsconference namelijk uitgezonden. Een Nederlandse cabaratier mag dan anderhalf uur lang zijn gedachten vertellen over wat er allemaal in Nederland gebeurt. Om twaalf uur verandert het Nederlandse luchtruim in één grote lichtshow. In december kopen Nederlanders massaal vuurwerk en om 12 uur zie je voor miljoenen euro's aan vuurwerk exploderen. Het is een groot spektakel maar je moet wel tegen lawaai kunnen. Voor huisdieren is dit bepaald geen feestdag. De Belgen steken minder vuurwerk af, maar België is wel het land waar veel Nederlanders hun vuurwerk kopen.	On New Year's Eve, many people are at home watching television because on this night, the New Year's 'conference' (show) is broadcast. For about one and a half hours, a Dutch comedian can share his thoughts about what is going in the Netherlands. At twelve, the Dutch sky ('air space') transforms into one big light show. In December, many Dutch buy fireworks and at 12 o'clock, you can watch millions of euros worth of fireworks explode. It is a huge spectacle but you must be able to cope with loud noise. For pets, this is not quite a holiday. The Belgians use fewer fireworks but Belgium is the country where many Dutch buy their fireworks.
De meeste Nederlanders associëren Pasen met de paashaas, maar voor christenen is dit de dag dat ze de wederopstanding van Christus herdenken. De paasdagen vallen altijd op een zondag en een maandag in maart of april. De winkels liggen vol met paaseieren en paashazen die van chocolade worden gemaakt. Thuis verven we kippeneieren en deze verstoppen we vervolgens ergens in huis of in de tuin. Kinderen moeten dan de paaseieren zoeken. En ook graag vinden, want het zijn echte eieren. Een week of zeven na Pasen vieren we Pinksteren en Hemelvaartsdag. Voor niet-christenen betekent dit gewoon een vrije dag.	Most Dutch associate Easter with the Easter bunny but for Christians, this is the day to commemmorate the resurrection of Christ. The Easter holidays are always on a Sunday and a Monday in March or April. Shops are filled with Easter eggs and Easter bunnies made of chocolate. At home, we paint chicken eggs and hide them somewhere in the house or in the garden. Children then have to look for the Easter eggs. And preferably find them too, as they are reall eggs. About seven weeks after Easter, we celebrate Ascension Day and Pentecost. For non-Christians, this usually just means a free day.
Op 30 april vieren de Nederlanders Koninginnedag. Op deze dag mag iedereen zonder vergunning zijn spullen op straat verkopen en de grote steden veranderen dan ook in één grote vrijmarkt. Aan het einde van de dag is het vaak één grote vuilnisbelt. Op de pleinen in de grote steden staan grote podia waar bekende en minder bekende artiesten optreden. Onze huidige koningin, Beatrix, is eigenlijk op 31 januari jarig, maar dit is in Nederland geen geschikte dag om buiten feest te vieren. 30 april was de verjaardag van Juliana, de moeder van Beatrix.	On April 30th, the Dutch celebrate Queen's Day. On this day, everyone is allowed to sell his stuff in the street without a permit so the big cities turn into big flea markets. And at the end of the day into big rubbish dumps. On the squares in the big cities, there are big stages where you can watch performances of well-known and less well-known artists. Our current queen, Beatrix, actually has her birthday on the 31st of January, but in the Netherlands, this is not a very suitable day to celebrate anything in the open air. The 30th of April was the birthday of Juliana, Beatrix's mother.
4 en 5 mei staan in het teken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Op 4 mei worden de doden herdacht en op 5 mei wordt de bevrijding van Nederland in 1945 gevierd. Op 4 mei is het om acht uur overal in Nederland twee minuten stil. Op 5 mei moeten de meesten gewoon werken. Eens in de vijf jaar is het een officiële feestdag. Op 5 december vieren we in Nederland en in delen van België Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas heette eigenlijk Sint-Nicolaas en hij kwam uit Myra, een plaatsje dat in het huidige Turkije ligt. De Nederlanders hebben er echter een eigen verhaal omheen verzonnen. Het lijkt een beetje op het verhaal van de Kerstman.	The 4th and 5th of May are all about World War II. On May 4th, we remember the dead and on May 5th, the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945 is celebrated. On May 4th, two minutes of silence are held in the Netherlands. Most people have to work on May 5th. Once every five years, this is an official public holiday. On December 5, we celebrate Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and some parts of Belgium. Sinterklaas was actually called Saint Nicholas and he came from Myra, a place that is situated in what we now call Turkey. The Dutch, however, created their own story. It is a bit similar to that of Santa Claus.
Volgens de legende leeft Sinterklaas nog en woont hij in Spanje. Hij is dus al eeuwen oud. Elke winter reist hij met de stoomboot naar het noorden om cadeautjes te brengen. De stoomboot vaart eind november de haven binnen en deze gebeurtenis kun je rechtstreeks volgen op de televisie. De kade staat vol met kinderen die uit volle borst sinterklaasliedjes zingen. Op pakjesavond pakken we de cadeautjes (de pakjes) uit. In Nederland krijg je niet alleen een cadeautje, maar ook een gedicht. En de echt enthousiaste sinterklaasvierders maken een surprise. Dit is een cadeautje dat op een originele manier wordt verpakt. Sommige surprises zijn echte kunstwerken.	According to the legend, Sinterklaas is still alive and he lives in Spain. This means he must be centuries old. Each winter, he travels to the north by steamer to bring presents. At the end of November, the steamer arrives in the harbour and this event can be viewed live on television.The embankments are crowded with children singing Sinterklaas songs. On 'presents night', we unwrap the presents. In the Netherlands, you do not only get a present but also a poem (rhyme). The real Sinterklaas enthusiasts also make 'surprises'. This is a gift that is wrapped or presented in an original way. Some 'surprises' are genuine pieces of art.
De dag na Sinterklaas liggen de winkels al vol met kerstspullen. De kerstdagen bestaan uit kerstavond, eerste kerstdag en tweede kerstdag. De christenen vieren de geboorte van Christus en op kerstavond zitten de kerken vol. De meesten brengen de kerstdagen door met familie. Bij de mensen thuis staat er meestal een kerstboom en sommigen hangen hun voorgevel vol met kerstverlichting. Nederlandse kinderen kennen de Kerstman wel, maar deze is lang niet zo populair als Sinterklaas. De kerstliedjes gaan ofwel over Christus, ofwel over de kerstman.	The day after Sinterklaas, the shops are already filled with Christmas items. The Christmas holidays consist of Christmas Eve, 'First Christmas Day' and 'Second Christmas Day'. Christians celebrate the birth of Christ and on Christmas Eve, the churches are full. Most people spend these days with their family. At home, they usually have a Christmas tree and some people decorate the facade of the house with Christmas lights. Dutch children do know Santa Claus but he is not half as popular as Sinterklaas. Christmas songs are either about Christ or about Santa Claus.
Zoals ik aan het begin al heb aangekondigd, gaat EetSmakelijk een kerstliedje voor ons zingen. Het is de Nederlandse versie van Jingle Bells.	As I already announced in the beginning, EetSmakelijk is going to sing a Christmas song for us. It is the Dutch version of Jingle Bells.
