Re: Dutch > English

I think "hoping against hope" is a biblical phrase so I wouldn't be surprised for there to be a similar (and familiar) phrase for it in many languages. Anyway, I can certainly attest to its use in British English too.

Re: Fonetische tekens

Below is the fourth of those consonant diagrams (I'd reached my attachment limit :P ). Here is a Wikipedia link describing the cardinal vowels (which I'd say is a good place to start with the vowels): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_vowel Not quite videos, I know, but I think this is sufficien...

Re: Fonetische tekens

Here is a link to an International Phonetic Alphabet chart: http://www.yorku.ca/earmstro/ipa/index.html And here's another: http://www.ladefogeds.com/course/chapter1/chapter1.html The first one's easier to use but the second has a better set of sounds, in my humble opinion. In so far as getting hold...

Re: Prefixes ver-, be-, ont-, and suffix lijk

Here are a couple of tables I found knocking around the internet that may be found to be of use. The first is a rather extensive list of Dutch prefixes and suffixes, including information about the category of words upon which these affixes are attached and what they produce, the function/meaning of...

Hi Viara, :D A couple of links to threads from this site that I think are pertinent: http://www.dutchgrammar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2563&sid=6131e093792afafe8bd071d38752c9c9 http://www.dutchgrammar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1190&sid=6131e093792afafe8bd071d38752c9c9 The first is to a sit...

Re: werkwoorden

Hi Bonnie, :D There is this book, '201 Dutch Verbs', which may be just what you are looking for: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dutch-Verbs-Fully-Conjugated-verbs/dp/0812007387/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1249043237&sr=8-1 If you were able to afford it, then there is always the software version of the 'Grote Va...

Re: Verb Query

I know that verbix doesn't always pick up on the inflected forms of verbs, but if you try putting the same word into the free online vandale dictionary it should tell you that 'aankomen' is the infinitive. In general, I've noticed that you can put inflected forms of verbs into this dictionary in ord...

Re: Rosetta Stone Dutch Course

Might I also mention this website as a free alternative to the Rosetta Stone line of software: http://www.taalklas.nl/ I would say that it is at least as good as, and perhaps in some ways better than Dutch levels I and II of the Rosetta Stone software, and, of course, did I mention that it's free? :D

Re: Dutch videos with word lists

I've managed to get the site to work fine in Internet Explorer 8, but in Firefox I could only get the texts to operate. The demos are quite limited anyway (as you'd expect). Nevertheless, from what I've seen, a reasonable idea for a website I thought, providing it can overcome these serious technica...

Thanks for all these wonderful links! Very much appreciated indeed! :D =D> The last couple of sites in particularly I can recommend to all language enthusiasts out there - there's an absolute goldmine of material covering well over 60 languages. Re: Pronunciation website

Wow! Brilliant find, Jazzed!

Not only is there a Dutch database (featuring almost 9000 words) but twelve other languages as well.

You can download the whole of each collection too....

Awesome! I just love the internet!

Re: Good Dictionary!

What about a good dictionary with pronounciation, i.e. with CD accompanying the book? I also need a dictionary, routledge dictionary seems to be good, however it lacks the CD. The big van dale dictionaries are just too expensive.. Actually, the one mentioned by the topic starter comes with a CD wit...

Re: Literatuur in Nederlands

This website also: http://manybooks.net/ Many books in many languages. Actually, I think the site I've mentioned is a watered-down, and perhaps more refined, version of the gutenberg website. Indeed, all the books I've come across so far have a Project Gutenberg credit on them, and so similarly to w...
