Re: Australian learning Dutch

I'm a lil discouraged to learn Dutch just because it is only spoken in one country. Whenever I get out of here, I feel like my effort's gone to waste! Can anyone else relate? Perhaps Wikipedia can re-encourage you, then... :) 'Most native speakers live in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname, wit...

Re: Free coffee in return for assistance!

Hi folks and thank you ever so much for all of your input! :) I have to admit to being a little lost in reading all the posts but hey, if the end justifies the means and such like...! One thing though going back to Nausea's post - the 'it's' is correct as it denotes posession whereas 'its' is short...

Re: Pronunciation of 'g' and 'ch'

Originally g is voiced (!) and ch is unvoiced, cf. the 't kofschip rule' for making the past tense forms of regular verbs. Apart from regional variations in pronunciation of this sound, both (written) letters represent one sound though. Groeten, Wim Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive here, but I wo...

Nog niet helemaal zeker

Hallo nog een keer, Ik heb "pronounciation" nog een keer voor u gecorrigeerd :-) ... maar nu moet ik toegeven, ik versta niet echt wat ge met "consciently" bedoelt? Consciously, perhaps? I am still not quite certain what you are saying when you write "actual standard". That is, I think I understand ...

Re: Dubbele negatie

Wikipedia offers this: "Both French and San origins have been suggested for double negation in Afrikaans. While double negation is still found in Low Franconian dialects in West-Flanders and in some "isolated" villages in the center of the Netherlands (i.e. Garderen), it takes a different form, whic...

Re: Levend Vlaams

Hallo Snoezig en allemaal. :D Ik vind het een fantastisch idee om in het Vlaams te schrijven. :) I think it's a great idea to write in Flemish. Ik ben nog niet wakker. I'm not awake yet. :( Dat vind ik spijtig. It's regrettable. Als ik slaap kan ik geen goed Vlaams. If I'm asleep I can't do Flemish...

Helaas is er voor zo ver ik weet geen Vlaamse ortografie ... Gelukkig is er voor zo ver ik weet geen speciale Vlaamse orthografie nodig om in het Vlaams te schrijven — alleen een pen, een potlood of een toetsenbord :-D [Fortunately, as far as I know, no special orthography is needed for writing 'Vl...

Levend Vlaams

Hoi allemaal, wie wil niet alleen over het Vlaams schrijven maar ook in het Vlaams? Verhalen? Gedichten? Gesprekskes over gij, den en nen? (En met vertalingen in het Engels zodat er een plaats is voor zowel de Vlaams-beginneling als de Vlaams-gevorderde :-D ) [Hi, everybody. Who would like not only ...

Re: New Routledge NL-EN/EN-NL Dictionary

Has any used or is using this dictionary? I'm a beginner, and need something similar to the french 'Collins Robert College Dictionary' ... This looked appropriate, especially for the price, And I liked how it showed the noun gender... I know it's not a Van Dale, but... What are your thoughts? Well....

Re: Woordvolgorde: theory vs practice

I think the problem that I have is that, as a native English-speaker, I'm used to matching the verb to its pronoun or its "helping" verb. As those words get separated, my brain gets confused. So BrutallyFrank's suggestion -- to pay attention to the meaning of the sentence -- might be the kind of di...
