Re: Help with moving to Holland!

If you are a UK citizen, you can just move here. It is suggested to apply for a residence permit because carrying ID here is compulsory, and you don't really want to carry your passport around everywhere. You also don't need to any Dutch tests whatsoever unless, five years down the road, you want to...

Re: Need motivation...or a kick up the you-know-what

Hi, I'm in the chatbox right now, if you want to practice. I know that's not listening, though... Joke  I'm off to the Paradiso in a bit!! But actually, I get writing practice during the day at work. Dutchie and I email back and forth in Dutch. A real brain exercise since my job is English-lan...

Re: how strange language can be

Heh, I just thought I'd mention this. There are a pair of Dutch sisters staying in my hostel. I noticed after a while that niether of them seemed to speak any Dutch. So I asked them about it. Apparently they prefer to communicate in English with each other, even though they both grew up speaking Du...

Re: Need motivation...or a kick up the you-know-what

Right. Just listening for now. The song thing might help, yeah. While you're at it, I'd like to pitch a word in for Ann Christy's excellent cover of Bette Midler's "The Rose" (titled, unsurprisingly, "De Roos"). She's Flemish, so somewhat different accent, but then it might be useful to hear differ...

Re: Need motivation...or a kick up the you-know-what

Just to add...last night my Dutchie downloaded a truckload of songs from You Tube by Willeke Alberti. She recorded a lot of translations of English hits in the 60s and 70s, and has a very nice voice. So I've asked him to put them on a USB stick so we can listen in the car and maybe I can learn the w...

Re: Need motivation...or a kick up the you-know-what

Thanks for replying, Quetzal. I'm actually not bad at writing and reading...but have purposely been trying to focus on on listening and speaking trying to "play catch-up". I somewhat blame my initial self-studying period for that. I started studying from the comically titled "Dutch in Three Months" ...

Need motivation...or a kick up the you-know-what

Groetjes, all! This is my first post here, and I apologize that it is in English (and longer than War & Peace) even though I've been living in Holland for over six years. I have serious learning issues and I don't know if it's just me or my experiences so far have totally destroyed my self-confidenc...
