Re: Troubles?

It seems to be the opposite for me. My listening is much better than my speaking. I guess that says something about which gets more practice. The bottleneck is vocabulary. I often don't know enough words to say something even if I keep the grammar within my limited knowledge. However, I can often fi...

Re: When is the best time to chat?

It looks like nobody came for the advanced chat last Friday. Not a good time? I was too busy. We can still try for a beginning chat this evening. Anyone welcome! :D

Yes, and I'm not sure if it the best time, but the poll would suggest it. I'm not sure how it will even work for me, but maybe we can just go with that for now.

Re: When is the best time to chat?

Would this be an appropriate place to invite those interested in chatting at a particular time? It has been quiet in the chat these days. Maybe we could set times/days for different levels: maandag 7-9pm beginner woensdag 7-9pm intermediate vrijdag 7-9pm advanced Of course anyone is welcome at any t...

Re: Zoek het juiste

It looks like someone took the English text and tried to translate each word individually (with some exceptions). How else would 'tweedehands' have come into it?

Re: De/het reading exercises

Het spijt me. De voormalige Bosnisch-Servische leider Radovan Karadzic is in Nederland aangekomen. Woensdagochtend rond half vier uur lokale tijd verliet een konvooi de speciale rechtbank in Belgrado, waar Karadzic werd vastgehouden, en reed naar het vliegveld. Daar stond een toestel klaar, waarmee ...

Re: De/het reading exercises

Can it be determined from the context that "handen" is plural? I knew it was already, but if I hadn't, I did not see any evidence of it. Since it ends in -en, there is a high probability that it's plural, but you can't be sure, that's true. Stereotypen en conflicten are also plural, but westen is n...

Re: De/het reading exercises

? handen (de) Plural words are always 'de'. So this one doesn't have to be a question mark, unless you want to know the article for the singular form, then it remains uncertain. But 'de' is correct, as are all your answers. Heel goed! Joke Can it be determined from the context that "handen" is plur...

De/het reading exercises

This is the first of a series of exercises to train you (and me) to learn grammar in context. For the full explanation, see here . You are to read the text, and list out all nouns, excluding proper nouns to make it simpler, proceeded by either 'de', 'het' or '?', depending on what was given or infer...

Re: De en het, and the English Brain

Grytolle, Your method sounds complicated to me. If it works for you, that's great. Your post got me thinking, though. One could go back through the same text looking for other specific grammatical elements. I suggest doing them individually, since each student has strengths and weaknesses, and so so...

De en het, and the English Brain

A lot has been said already about the difficulty of learning "de" words from "het" words. I imagine that this is of particular difficulty for anyone whose native language is English. This is because English nouns are all neuter, so we don't have the gender concept at all in our grammar (other than "...

Re: Het Verenigd Koninkrijk

Het Verenigd Koninkrijk. That's hard to pronounce with 'g,' 'd,' and 'k' all together like that. If I were from the UK, I'd be sure to lie about it. ;)

I had no idea until now that koninkrijk was a het word.
