Is there any rule for where ZELF sits in a sentence? Does it follow a verb or noun?

Usually just after the finite verb:

Ik heb gisteren lekker gewandeld
Ik heb zelf gisteren lekker gewandeld

Or after the direct object

Ik heb dat niet gezien
Ik heb dat zelf niet gezien

You can also put it in the first slot for emphasis. Then you get inversion

Zelf heb ik gisteren lekker gewandeld
Zelf heb ik dat niet gezien
