Wie helpt de hond of wie helpt de hond??

[woordvolgorde]
According to many, the word order is one of the hardest parts of the Dutch language. If you are also struggling with subordinate clauses, inversion and the like, this is the place to be.

Wie helpt de hond of wie helpt de hond??

Post by ikhebjouhartXD » Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:35 am

I`ve already asked this question from 4 dutch people and none of them know the answer:D

So i decided to post it here
how do u make a difference between the two questions in dutch?:1.Who helps the dog?2.who does the dog help?

to me and to those dutch people I asked it can only be translated in one way:wie helpt de hond? but what if the hond helps someone?? or which one does this really mean?? both? then how do you feel the difference?? #-o

dank u wel!!

The interpretation of the sentence will only become clear when you'd read the context in which it is placed. The question can indeed be explained in two different ways, but the meaning of 'who does the dog help' is the least common in the way the question is asked.
It's not clear who's the subject and who's direct object.

If you rephrase the question by using the past participle and 'door' it'll be much clearer:
Door wie wordt de hond geholpen? (who helps the dog)
Wie wordt door de hond geholpen? (who does the dog help)
"Moenie worrie nie, alles sal reg kom" (maar hy het nie gesê wanneer nie!)

Now that I think about it: I was wondering if the pronunciation would make any difference. But actually it would make it more difficult ...

If I would emphasize 'wie', it would question who would be helping the dog. But if 'de hond' would be emphasized it could very well be that there's more than one animal that needs help. But hey ... I never said Dutch is easy! ;)

Good question, by the way!
