Dutch phonetics and phonology

Post by edwardjameswells » Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:55 am

I'm not sure these will be to everybody's taste, but for those interested in a technical study of Dutch phonology, and a contrastive study of English and Dutch phonetics, then here are a few books I've come across available for free on the internet.

Kite

Hello Kite,

First and foremost, let me apologize for replying in English. Please don't take it the wrong way; it merely reflects the fact that I am very much a beginner of Dutch, and would most certainly not be able to express myself anything like as accurately as I need to.

As to your query, I think I understand, but I'm sorry to disappoint as I'm not a language professional of any description - just someone who finds himself learning Dutch and favouring a systematic approach in doing so. Indeed, I would say that I am probably more like the people you want to help rather than someone who could assist you in giving this help! Nevertheless, the issues you allude to are ones that I have thought about quite often myself, and though it would probably be less useful for you to hear my musings, perhaps you may find this more useful;

I haven't been using 'praat' myself yet, but I plan to, and it does seem to offer exactly the kind of assistance you're looking for.

Do let me know what you make of it ;)

Best wishes,
James
