Dutch/Flemish news with subtitles or full transcript?

Postby bokassa » March 17th, 2009, 6:17 pm

Hello,

thanks to this forum I have come across to an overwhelming array of material in Dutch. However there's still one thing I am looking for, though I am not sure it exists at all. I am looking for an online source of Dutch/Flemish news, either videos with subtitles or audio with full transcript.

If you are familiar with German (and I am sure many of you are) I am looking for something silmilar to Deutsche Welle "Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten":
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,8030,00.html
or Deutschland Funk "Text zum Beitrag", one example:
http://www.dradio.de/dlf/sendungen/inte ... lf/935820/

so that i can associate the words with the sounds. I am aware of the 2bdutch.nl initiative but apart from the fact that it doesn't work on my pc they are mostly show while I am looking for news.

The closest thing I have found are the wereldomroep Columns, ex:
http://www.wereldomroep.nl/actua/nl/col ... emmerechts

and the Buitenhof columns:
http://www.vpro.nl/programma/buitenhof/ ... /41216753/

But unfortunately these are very rare and they are not really actual news. I hope somebody has a clue. Thank you.

Hoi Bokassa,

Although I don't know of any Dutch news websites with subtitles, I have seen quite a few clips on You Tube with Dutch substitles, and occaisionally a full transcript, which can be found by clicking on the "more info" link to the right of each clip. I have found a lot of clips on Youtube of Disney movies in Dutch with full transcripts.

Groetjes,

Cathleen

De krantencommentaren (RVI)

Postby bokassa » March 19th, 2009, 5:10 pm

RVI has a full transcript of "De krantencommentaren":
http://www.rvi.be/rvi_master/kranten/rv ... ndex.shtml
To get the audio go the "radio een" page:
http://www.radio1.be/actua/
and click on "De krantencommentaren".

It's not very long but it's better than nothing.

Dat klinkt erg goed, Bokassa! Ik zal het proberen! Ik denk dat het is zo mooi dat er online heel dingen in het Nederlands zitten!

Not exactly what you were looking for, but Het Nieuws on VTM will often use Dutch subtitles if the speaker uses a particularly heavy regional accent:

The following are not news programs, but they use Dutch subtitles throughout, for what reason, I am not sure:

Because those programs are originally from The Netherlands, so all sorts of accents from here can turn up - the Flemish can't always understand that (or at least VTM is afraid of that) :) Another subtitled one in Belgium is the Dutch police series "Baantjer", btw :)

oops..

You couldn't find a single Dutchman in the episodes I saw yesterday atleast:P Several of the Flemings had marked accents though (but not so badly that the learner should feel he don't need to learn to understand them), perhaps that has sth do to with it

No, it's Flemish that is subtitled, funnily enough. They're not Dutch shows (though perhaps the Netherlands have their own versions of those same shows), but it's true that some Dutch shows, like Baantjer, are indeed subtitled as well (and the other way around for Flemish series like Flikken in the Netherlands). It depends on the program, though: sometimes only the more difficult accents are subtitled, sometimes they just subtitle everyone.

What's even more bizarre is that when people on those shows say things in English, as we do sometimes to express certain things, sometimes the subtitles put it in English as well. You'd think the things said in English would be the things that most needed subtitles to translate... but apparently not.

Strange!

A bit off-topic: Sometimes, I'm really glad with the subs watching Flemish tv-programs. Also when I watched the Flemish film "Aanrijding in Moscou" I wouldn't have understood lots of words or expressions without the subs! Soms echt andere koek, dat Vlaams :)
