What books did you read at school?

Recommendations and opinions of books, dictionaries, programs, movies, shows, comedy, video players (region issues), music, websites, courses, where to buy Dutch stuff if you don't live there, etc.

What books did you read at school?

Post by Mellifera » Mon Jun 23, 2014 9:29 am

Hi,

I'm reading "Karakter" by F. Bordewijk right now. I loaned a book from my bf's sister, and she said they had to read it at school.

I think it would be a good idea to read the literature that was obligatory for the dutch people to read at some point to kind of understand the cultural references better.

So my question is: Do you remember the books you had to read as a teen at school? Which one you liked the most/impressed you the most?

Thanks.

Dit is een top tien na een internetonderzoek van NRC en NPS:

Harry Mulisch - De ontdekking van de hemel (1992)
Kader Abdolah - Het huis van de moskee (2005)
Multatuli - Max Havelaar (1860)
J. Bernlef - Hersenschimmen (1984)
W.F. Hermans - De donkere kamer van Damokles (1963)
W.F. Hermans - Nooit meer slapen (1966)
J.J. Voskuil - Het bureau
Nescio - De uitvreter, Titaantjes, Dichtertje (1933) Dichtbundel
Gerard Reve - De avonden (1947)
Thomas Rosenboom - Publieke werken (1999) Historische roman

Checken (Anglicisme) of uitzoeken. Uitchecken doe je als je een hotel verlaat (inchecken als je aankomt).

For people who live in The Netherlands: go to Action (low-budget store) ... they have 'luisterboeken' for sale at €1.99 a piece. They've got Bernlef (Hersenschimmen), Jeroen Brouwer (Bezonken rood), Arnon Grunberg, Maarten 't Hart, Jan de Hartog (Hollands glorie), Heere Heeresma, Hella Haase, Arthur Japin, Joost Zwagerman (Gimmick).

2 remarks:
- Not always the best books of these auteurs, but pretty decent ones ... and at a bargain price! Sometimes 90% off
- Sometimes it's a shortened version of the book
