Wikibooks revisisted

Post by ngonyama » Wed May 06, 2015 6:41 pm

I wrote the better part of the Wikibooks course on Dutch a while ago. At the time there were only a limited number of audio files available at commons and I always found that a pretty bad limitation in making the wikibook attractive for new learners.

Today the situation is a bit different. Virtually all Dutch words, including conjugated forms like heeft or grotere now have a sound file and I have started updating the book accordingly see e.g. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Dutch/Lesson_1, also adding more practice material. There are a number of image+sound vocabulary training pages, see e.g.http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Dutch/Vocabulary/Landscape and I intend to create some more. (Takes a lot of time though).

I would welcome experiences, opinions and suggestions. :)

I've been working pretty hard on updating the wikibook lately. There is a lot of sound files included now, but I have also started adding a parallel series of lessons of a more cultural nature, in part nursery rhymes often with links to existing YouTube videos. In part also pieces of poetry (Van Alphen, de Génestet, Gorter, Gezelle even) I managed to hook up my H4n recorder to my new laptop and am recording longer pieces of spoken text. I just did a piece of Gorter's Mei e.g. and plan to do more reading and reciting.

An update.

I had some feedback from someone learning Dutch who told me that the wikibook would me more useful if it had links to sites like memrize and quizlet in it. So, I have been playing around in quizlet (memrise did not really let me do what I wanted to do) and I have started to create quizlet sets for the vocabulary taught on various pages.

What I have so far:
One is on personal pronouns https://quizlet.com/85109848/dutch-pers ... ash-cards/
Another is on the 56 most common Dutch words https://quizlet.com/84964137/survival-k ... ash-cards/
A third one trains the past tense of weak verbs and strong verbs of class 1,2 and 3 https://quizlet.com/85085666/dutch-past ... ash-cards/

A little update. I have divided the course in a Beginner, Intermediary and Advanced level. The Beginner level is pretty much done, although I might tweak it a bit more here and there. I still have some more to add to the Intermediary, but I doubt that I will add more to the advanced stuff, because that is mostly a collection of special topics.

The beginner level consists of two cycles of 12 lessons each with a lot of audio and visual material and also quizzes in the practice lessons that you can fill in and push a button to have them graded. Larger quizzes -quasi exams- have been added at the end of cycle 1 and 2. I have also provided links to corresponding quizlet sets for the vocabulary for each lesson. Each lesson plus its practice and example companions teaches roughly 120 new term.

https://quizlet.com/ngonyama contains my training sets.

All in all there may well be a years worth of stuff, but people can pick and choose what they want.

Voor mij zijn die nog complex maar ook mooi.

Klip vanuit : https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Dutch/Lesson_17

''In Dutch many prepositions have an—often identical—adverbial form, the prepositional adverb, that occurs either as part of a separable verb or as the prepositional part of the pronominal adverb or simply by itself. As we have seen both of those compounds play a considerable role in Dutch grammar. Thus the separation between prepositions and adverbs is not as sharp in Dutch as it is in some other languages. In a sense Dutch is a rather adverbial language: adverbs play a major role.''
