IJ character at the start of a name.

Ideas for learning Dutch. What have you tried? What worked for you? What did not work for you?

IJ character at the start of a name.

Post by Mandaratos » Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:21 am

Hello,

I want to know more about the names starting with 'IJ' character.

Suppose the name of a person is 'Mr. IJzeren bij de Rijn'.
What will be his name with initials?
Will it be 'Mr. IJ bij de Rijn' or 'Mr. I bij de Rijn'?

Thanks,
Mandar

In such a case, we write IJ as initial.
Actually, the only common first name I know starting with IJ is IJsbrand.

And "common" is pushing it a bit there... :P

You're right. Let me put it this way:
The only first name starting with IJ I've ever heard is IJsbrand.
