edelsmid

Post by Tom » Mon Oct 31, 2005 7:40 pm

Een edelsmid werkt met goud, zilver en soms platina.
A precious metals worker works with gold, silver, and sometimes platinum.

precious metals ~ noble metals --> noble metal smith --> edelsmid

They are so precious only the rich nobles could afford them. That helps me remember it.

Hi Laura,

The Dutch word edelsmid means a worker in precious metals. He's the one who produces or repairs jewelry, a goldsmith or silversmith. Precious metals like silver, gold or platinum are often called edelmetalen in Dutch.

Groetjes,
Wim

Hallo and dank jullie wel for clearing that up!
That wasn't at all obvious to me, I'd never heard of an edelsmid before, but now I have and I won't forget it (which is the whole point of this, hooray, learning...)
I've only heard of noble gases in English (helium, neon etc.), do we have noble metals as well? They're just as loathe to react with anything else. I've only heard gold and platinum called "native" because you find them in the ground as an element rather than a compound.
(strays once again into the world of science, I hope you will forgive me for the sake of an etymological enquiry :) )

Groetjes,
LJ
