Phonetic exercises

The exercises are only available on the 'old forum', i.e. the forum before the January 2008 update. You can still do the old exercises here: www.dutchgrammar.com/forum/quiz.php

Phonetic exercises

Post by Marco » Wed Oct 18, 2006 5:52 pm

Hi,

as some of you might know I'm a student of the English language and culture and in this study there's a course called 'Phonetics'. We deal with the book English pronunciation for student teachers and I thought it might be fun to show you some of the exercises. The following exercises are about the Dutch language:

Which Dutch words are represented by the following transcription?

1 /rɛit/
2 /kɔu/
3 /ˈniʋzbərıxtə/
4 /ˈsxıbrøˑk/
5 /ˈhɑntfɑt/
6 /ˈtœymboˑnə/
7 /ˈʒɛːnə/
8 /kruːs/
9 /kɑtəˈstrɔːfə/

Transcribe the following Dutch words:

1 tafelblad
2 numeriek
3 voetveeg
4 blinddoeken
5 schouwburg [the choice is up to you whether you make a difference between ch and g]
6 uiensnijder
7 dolkstoot
8 aanlegsteiger
9 informatie
10 zigeuner

Have fun!

Knowing phonetic characters is extremely useful when learning a foreign language but I don't think that everyone on this forum is equipped with this knowledge.

This article on wikipedia could be useful:

Is anyone going to give it a try? ;-)
