My Finch Theory

Post by SaintWillibrorth » Wed May 30, 2012 7:00 pm

The chaffinch is one of the commonest birds in Northern Europe, and the brightly coloured male bird can be seen and heard in our gardens giving his alarm call "fink, fink, fink", but never "finch".

This small bird is so familiar that they called him "het vinkje". The diminutive seems like a modern idiom, but its use in German and Frysk suggests that it has been with us for a long time. Try some of these English words as examples:

Beech; from "beuk(hout)" > "beukje".

usw. → enz. (usw. is Duits namelijk)

Zweden is het land en het volk.
De taal heet Zweeds.
