Why do you have to manually refresh the chatbox (het kwebbelhoekje)?

In the beginning, the kwebbelhoekje was configured to refresh automatically. This was convenient because new messages would appear automatically. However, several people complained that it slowed down the website. To make sure that people with slower internet connection can use the forum too, it seemed better to disable the automatic refresh function.

/raises hand and waits patiently.

Is it possible to let the individual viewer set this under their preferances? That way if your on 2 cans and some string you can do it manually and if you have an OC-12 then it's automatic. However as I don't know how you have your site configured I can't make an educated guess.

Woot! I had to read it twice to understand what you mean. Bear in mind that I am not a programmer. :p I am actually planning to get another chatbox so I prefer not to spend too much time on improving the one we have now. I am looking for a chatbox that can easily be integrated on a phpbb forum. I have done a bit of research and came across this one:

Flash Chat (http://www.tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm)

Of course, it will be completely customized to our forum.

There are very nice Java chatboxes out there but they are not very user friendly for all users. If you are using a speech synthesizer, for example, you will not be able to chat.

If you know of a chatbox script that seems better than Flash Chat, do let me know.

Hoi Bieneke. I checked out FlashChat. I could log in, but I did not see where to type; there was no edit field. Also, some of the buttons were not labelled so I don't know what they do.
This might all be fixable, but I don't know. I'd be willing to help you test it, it may just need a few tweaks and you said it was customizable so maybe we can get it accessible and friendly for all. I remember one user saying they don't like animations, does that chat have a lot of those? Not sure about download times etc, but it seemed to load quite fast.
Another possibility is that we use IRC to chat off the forum. I know there are web clients that allow people without chat programs to log into those. I have a chat program called mirc which is great for irc. Not sure if you want that but just throwing all ideas op tafel can I say that? :P

Thanks, Es!

We have had Irc chat for a short while but I do not remember why I got rid of it. Perhaps we should look at it again. It would be great if you could test the different options before implementing it.

To be continued! :-)

Okies Bieneke, I'll ask a couple of experts I know (aka computer geeks) on kwebbelhoekje (aka live chat boxes) that need to be screen reader friendly. I'll do some searching later, I'm assuming free is best :)

http://www.dirfile.com/freeware/chat-box.htm

Has all kinds of freeware chat programs.

Looked at morevil web chat lite 2.4, seems simple (gegege)
http://www.morevil.com/

http://www.tinit.co.uk/?s=miniChat looked promising but I can't find much out about it.

Wow, thanks Jeff!

I will look into it later. Now I am really out of here (as I already announced about an hour ago :D).

Groetjes!
