Dutch GrammarRock

We used to have a childrens program in the United States called Grammar Rock.

They had very catchy songs over grammar, believe it or not.

Here is my first attempt at a Dutch one.

I am not a native Dutch speaker but I did my best at making it funny and at times
possibly educational.

It is about how you make imperative sentences.

I will post a translation later. In the mean time it is food for thought for the curious.

Bevelen

Wees niet saai
Maak veel lawaai
Houd je taai
Wees een papegaai

Hou je bek
Doe even gek
Opgelet
Je bent onderweg

Reis met Roel
Hij is reuze cool
Leer een boel
Ach, Wat een gedoe

Koor: Zo

Neem de stam ‘s even
En zet het ervoor

Spreek het uit met sterkte
Net als een drilboor

Koor: Dan

Toon je smoel
Blijf toch maar cool
Pak je doel
Een krachtig gevoel

Ga vooruit
Neem een besluit
Graai de buit
Ontsteek het buskruit

Reis met Roel
Hij is reuze cool
Leer een boel
Ach, Wat een gedoe

Koor: Want

Dit zijn nu bevelen
Die ik nu aan je geef

Luister maar ‘s even
Je wordt onbeleefd

Koor: Dus

Speel de dwaas
Ledig je blaas
Eet ouwe kaas
Zo word je een daas

Zet ‘em op
Sta op je kop
Draag een dop
Eet lekkere drop

Reis met Roel
Hij is reuze cool
Leer een boel
Ach, Wat een gedoe

Koor: Echt

Wil je onbeschoft zijn
Dan doe wat ik zeg

Ben je nou een watje
Zonder aanleg

Koor: Maar

Toon ootmoed
Vergiet geen bloed
’t is een tegoed
Blijf netjes goed

Reis met Roel
Hij is reuze cool
Leer een boel
Ach, Wat een gedoe

Your Dutch is very good, of course... a few small things:

- While we do use English "cool", we use the original spelling (obviously this is not something you'd use in official texts, but it's fine in songs). "Koel" only has the literal meaning of cold/fresh, although people sometimes do use it like you did if they want to protest against all the English words, I guess.

- Besluit, not belsuit, but that was a typo of course.

- Die ik nu maar aan je geef (word order)

- What exactly do you mean by "daas"? As far as I'm aware it's some obscure kind of bug, somehow I doubt you meant to say that...

- "Eet lekkere drop" sounds a lot better than "eet een lekker drop" - drop is usually an uncountable, although "een dropje" is used too. "Een drop", though, is odd.

- Dan doe je wat ik zeg OR Doe dan wat ik zeg - but not a combination of both.

- Ontmoed? What did you mean to say there?

- Saying that "bloed is een tegoed" is technically correct, but fairly eyebrow-raise-worthy. Then again, it has to rhyme. ;)

It's quite impressive otherwise, nice work. :)

Thanks for the corrections

Thanks Quetzal,

I fixed the “cool” bits.

I fixed the “besluit” on my paper version but it didn’t make its way to the electronic version.

In transcribing “Die ik nu aan je geef” I messed that up too!

daas1 de (m.)
persoon
scatterbrain
muddlehead

Believe it or not I had “Eet lekkere drop” on my paper too.

“Dan doe wat is zeg” is now fixed.

Ontmoed should be Ootmoed. Another mistake.

After most of the song tries to get people to use commands
I am now trying to say that it really isn’t such a nice thing to do all of the time

Toon ootmoed
Show a little humilty
Vergiet geen bloed
Don’t spill blood (don’t be so aggressive)
‘t is een tegoed
It is a credit or an asset (to be nice)
Blijf netjes goed
Keep being nice

I spent hours on this and still so many mistakes!

I REALLY appreciate your help Quetzal.

Hartelijk bedankt :)

Np. And as you say, most of the rare mistakes you made were typoes or copying errors, which makes it even more impressive work.

Tom, dat ziet er goed uit! Wat vindt de regisseur (Dora!) ervan?
Tom, that looks great! What does the director think of it?

Okay. Here is the latest version including an English translation.

I hope I haven't introduced any more mistakes with my corrections. :)

Bevelen
Commands/orders

Wees niet saai
Don’t be dull/boring

Maak veel lawaai
Make a lot of noise/big racket

Houd je taai
Never say die

Wees een papegaai
Be a parrot (repeat after me)

Hou je bek
Shut up (Keep your trap shut)

Doe even gek
Go a bit crazy

Opgelet
Pay attention

Word een dikke nek
Become stuck up

Reis met Roel
Travel with Ralph

Hij is reuze cool
He is mega cool

Leer een boel
Learn a lot

Ach! Wat een gedoe
Oh! What a situation

Koor: Zo!
Chorus: So!

Neem de stam ’s even
Take the stem (of the verb)

En zet het ervoor
And put it in the front (of the sentence)

Spreek het uit met sterkte
Pronounce it with vigor (strength)

Net als een domoor
Just like a nincompoop

Koor: Dan!
Chorus: Then!

Toon je smoel
Show your face

Blijf toch maar cool
Just keep being cool

Pak je doel
Fetch your goal

Een krachtig gevoel
A powerful feeling

Ga vooruit
Go forward

Neem een besluit
Make a decision

Graai de buit
Grab the loot

Het kost je geen duit
It doesn’t cost you a cent

Reis met Roel
Travel with Ralph

Hij is reuze cool
He is mega cool

Leer een boel
Learn a lot

Ach! Wat een gedoe
Oh! What a situation

Koor: Want!
Chorus: Because!

Dit zijn nu bevelen
Now these are command

Die ik nu aan je geef
That I am giving you

Luister maar ’s even
Just listen a moment

Je wordt onbeleefd
Your becoming impolite

Koor: Dus!
Chorus: Thus!

Speel de dwaas
Play the fool

Ledig je blaas
Empty your bladder

Eet ouwe kaas
Eat aged cheese

Zo word je een daas
In this way you are becoming a scatterbrain

Zet ‘em op
Get it together (Take it away)

Sta op je kop
Stand on your head

Draag een dop
Wear a derby

Eet een lekker drop
Eat a tasty piece of licorice

Reis met Roel
Travel with Ralph

Hij is reuze cool
He is mega cool

Leer een boel
Learn a lot

Ach! Wat een gedoe
Oh! What a situation

Koor: Echt!
Chorus: Really!

Wil je onbeschoft zijn
Do you want to be rude

Dan, doe wat ik zeg
Then do what I say

Ben je nou een watje
Are you a jerk (or sissy)

Dan, ga uit mijn weg
Then get out of my way

Koor: Maar!
Chorus: But!

Toon ootmoed
Show some humility

Vergiet geen bloed
Don’t spill any blood (don’t be so aggressive)

‘t is een tegoed
It is a credit (or an asset to be nice)

Blijf netjes goed
Keep being nice

Reis met Roel
Travel with Ralph

Hij is reuze cool
He is mega cool

Leer een boel
Learn a lot

Ach! Wat een gedoe
Oh! What a situation

Tom, your song is so cool! You've outdone us all!
8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Ben ik de regisseur? Oh, my. I will need some assistants to evaluate any audio contributions.

By, the way, I love muppets, but I've never knew about Fraggles before.

I am working on a way to put the song into into an mp3. At minimum I will make a raw a capella version which I will send to Bien. In then end it might be better to make 1 mp3 per line or verse if that makes it easier for editing and time adjusting.

I currently don't have the time nor software to produce more than the raw material input. So if you are willing to put it together and direct it that is fine.

Let's hope that we can get volunteers to help. I think the effort is larger than you think and it will be made easier if several people pool their efforts. You may want to think of starting with a small trailer of clips submitted by people in an effort to attract more volunteers to the project. You could add some comentary introducing each clip perhaps and put some music in the background.

Maybe ask for volunteers for particular tasks. We need to come up with something to get more participants before we attempt the real radio show to test its feasability.

A sort of proof of concept.

Slight modifications to my song

I have made slight modifications to the song.

Back to Dan doe and Dan ga.

It is meant to link to the previous verse.

I posted the lyrics and the song here http://www.esnips.com/web/My-Dutch-Stuff/

There is a karaoke version is anyone wants to try singing it themselves.

I noticed a few mistakes in my version so in the future I may replace it with a better version. I doubt that my singing will improve much however.

I home some of you have fun with it.

I would really like to hear a version by a Flemish and Dutch native speaker as I am sure we all would.

Groetjes,
Tom

Hoi allemaal.
I read in the KH that you all were still looking for somebody to sing Tom's song. I love this song and so I am working on singing it. I ran into one problem though, aside from memorizing the words because the song goes too fast for me to read and sing at the same time. When I record in Audacity the tracks are not in sync with each other. The help in audacity mensions this and says to use time shift to move the tracks into the right position. The problem is I cannot find this option. I am wondering if once I record the words if somebody would be able to help me get my recording to sync with the background music. It might be a couple days before I have the song ready, but once I do I will put it up on esnips for anybody who wants to help me fix my tracks.
I hope this can be done, no idea if I can post audacity projects on esnips?
Bedankt en groetjes,
