Dutch on the Daily Show

Post by Quetzal » Wed Feb 27, 2008 10:43 pm

The American visitors here might know of the Daily Show, a comedy program that's fairly popular in America. The presenter, Jon Stewart, seems to have a thing with jokes about Belgium and the Netherlands, and so he apparently convinced a Dutch guest in the audience to talk in Dutch.

The link is here. I'm posting this mostly because my girlfriend really wants to know what it is the woman says, and for some reason the clip won't work for me, so I can't find out myself (or, obviously, post a transcript). Might be a good exercise for some of our learners, though I gather it's fairly hard to understand... thanks in any case to anyone who tries. :)

You're right, it is quite hard to understand.
I'm not sure what the second word is; it sounds like 'sonde'; but I don't think that's the right word.
"Het ???? die wegen te zegen" I think she says.

The Dutch woman in the audience answers: "Ik zou het niet weten te zeggen."

It sounds as if it isn't even a Dutch woman saying it! There's a strong accent, but I can't determine where it's from ...

Since the video is finally working now... it actually sounds a lot more Flemish than Dutch. Southern Netherlands perhaps, or just a Flemish woman who moved to the Netherlands...

I'd actually say it's some American woman who speaks Dutch fluently or a Dutch one from the east/north of the country ... :D

On listening again... definitely a native speaker. Could be Flemish, but I guess it could be a special Dutch accent too.

I've listened to it again and I disagree with you. Just listen to her saying 'zeggen'. It sounds more like an "S" than a "Z" ...

Besides that: who would say 'weten te zeggen'? Normally one would say "Ik zou het niet kunnen zeggen" or "Ik zou het niet weten".

But I'm very sure that she's not from the south of the Netherlands ... "g" isn't soft enough

Flemish it is, then, sounded more Flemish than Dutch to me from the start anyway... If it is a non-native speaker, it's one who speaks it so good as to be indistinguishable from a native speaker, so no reason to assume that, methinks. :P

And as for what she says, I don't know... not really the most obvious answer to give, but a perfectly correct sentence.

There's one thing I'd like to point out: "I wouldn't know how to say it" (Ik zou het niet weten te zeggen)

That would have to be a Babelfish translation ...

It is hard to put where the woman actually is from, my first impression was Noord-Brabant. I too agree with the people who say she is a native speaker.

The answer the woman gives to the first question is "Dutch". The way she speaks the u (like in "nurse"; /ɘ/) tells me she is very likely native to the Dutch language because someone native to English would pronounce the u in Dutch like the u in "strut"; /ʌ/.

I played the video to a friend and her first impression was also that the woman is from Noord-Brabant.

I'm a native speaker of Dutch from Tilburg, Noord-Brabant. When I heard this woman speaking, I immediately heard she's a native speaker, she's Dutch, not Belgian and she's most likely from Noord-Brabant as well. Her pronunciation is typically Brabantic, I hear it here all day long.
