Need help to translate a phrase

Post by showy12 » Thu Nov 06, 2014 1:56 pm

I need to translate this phrase: "Ordinary people don't know how much books can mean to someone who's cooped up" to dutch. I don´t manage this languaje. I found this on the internet: "Gewone mensen weten ook niet hoevel boeken voor een opgesloten betekenen" but I don´t understand dutch. Thanks for the help.

The translation is pretty good, but has some minor mistakes ...

"Gewone mensen weten niet hoeveel boeken kunnen betekenen voor iemand die is opgesloten." (that's a straight translation)
More casual: "Mensen hebben geen benul wat boeken voor een gevangene kunnen betekenen."

I left out 'gewone' because we just use 'mensen' (that's ordinary enough). By using the words 'geen benul' (or 'idee/notie/besef' instead of 'benul'), it makes the message stronger by pointing out that they have no clue whatsoever.
"Moenie worrie nie, alles sal reg kom" (maar hy het nie gesê wanneer nie!)

I think "cooped up" is a little weaker than "prisoner". Maybe "iemand die aan huis gebonden is"? "Iemand die de deur niet uit kan"?

"Mensen hebben geen benul wat boeken voor een opgeslotene kunnen betekenen" dan. :)
