Bare naked ladies

Post by Will E. Brook » Fri Dec 11, 2015 11:51 pm

On 4 December I was watching NPO Radio 1 (there's a webcam in the studio) and they did a story about Playboy magazine publishing its last ever nude photo. The word the presenter used was "barrefoefs". Well it's pretty obvious from the context what it means, but I can't find it in any Dutch-English dictionary, in print or on line. When I Googled it the only results were for that radio feature (I think the item is still available for listening). So is it a real Dutch word? Would it be all right if I used it in polite company?

Do you have a link for that show and tell us at approximately what time the phrase is being used?

The word 'barrefoefs' isn't familiar. 'Barrevoets' is, which means 'barefoot'. BUT the word 'foef' in itself means vagina in Flemish (slang).

"Would it be all right if I used it in polite company?" I doubt if real polite company would even be handling such a subject ...

I can't post the recording because it says the file is too big. A young lady called Willemijn Veenhoven is in the studio, and she looks to me like very polite company indeed.

I listened to the story and to be honest I still don't know what 'barrefoefs' really means. I suspect it to be a bastardization of the words I mentioned before.

Barrevoets: also 'blootvoets' means barefoot.
Foef: usually used as a trick (although mostly used as a diminutive: foefje) in Dutch; In Flemish it's a slang word for vagina.

I guess that 'barrefoefs' is a pun/euphemism used to say some woman is naked. Even though it's pretty clever, it's not common to use it in a conversation (yet?). As you mention yourself: the only hits on Google refer to that one show ...
