Dutch DVD's - Regions and Subtitles?

Recommendations and opinions of books, dictionaries, programs, movies, shows, comedy, video players (region issues), music, websites, courses, where to buy Dutch stuff if you don't live there, etc.

Dutch DVD's - Regions and Subtitles?

Post by cecily » Wed Nov 12, 2008 2:51 am

First I apologize if this is in the wrong section.. I'm new to the boards, but I hope you'll forgive me :)

So, I have been wanting to order some DVD's from bol.com -
It's one of the few sites that has the Dutch items I want, and also ships outside of NL/BE.

I realize the DVD is in region 2 format, but this should be no problem if I'm to watch on the computer, I think?
(Volgens mij niet maar ik woon in de VS dus 1 of A: region wij gebruik)

Another thing I was wondering is, do Dutch DVD's usually have Dutch subtitles available to turn on?
Because for some shows, I really need to see the Dutch words to keep up! :o

If anyone could help me with these questions I'd be really grateful!

Hello, cecily! Welkom.

There isn't any reason why your computer shouldn't technically be able to play Region 2 DVDs, no. But often there are mechanisms put into the computers by the Powers That Be that make that impossible or difficult. I don't know what sort of computer you have, but I have a Mac, and the Mac DVD player that comes with the computer allows you to switch the region five times only, and then you have to pick one. Strangely, though, there's no problem with watching Region 2 DVDs from an external DVD player, so that's what I've been doing. But before you buy any Region 2 DVDs, you might want to look into what the specifics are about your particular hardware and your particular software. It's all different.

Some of them do, some of them don't. That's something you'll have to find out by reading the description of each DVD that you want. If you need help understanding the Dutch in order to do that, though, people here would definitely be able to help you with that. I'd say most of them do, though--for the hearing impaired. So you're on the right track!

Also you can get subtitles for in many languages to a huge range of shows and films from websites like;

http://www.allsubs.org/

However, I'm not so sure whether you'd be able to use these in conjunction with a DVD without perhaps reformating the subtitles first - I don't know, but maybe there's some workable solution?

Bedankt voor de antwoorden :)

Jae, I also have a Mac, I never knew about switching the regions for the DVD player, I guess I've never tried -
I'm thinking I'll be able to play them just fine, or I hope so, anyway!

I tried finding whether or not the DVD has subtitles as an option, but I couldn't see anything -
For instance http://www.bol.com/nl/p/dvd/kinderen-ge ... escription you see it doesn't mention anything.

I'm also looking into buying some books in Dutch -
Does anyone have any suggestions? Books aimed towards children would be great, too.
I'd love to immerse myself in things like that, because that's how we naturally learned our native language.

Ook bedankt Edward, I will see about grabbing some subtitles from there in the future!

Presuming you have the most common hardware/software combination, you'll be able to play them just fine as long as you don't keep switching back and forth between region 2 and region 1 DVDs (which, like I said, you can only do five times). But looking up your specific setup and reading about compatibility with other regions' DVDs should tell you for sure.

Thanks for all of the help everyone :)

Joke, that thread gave some good ideas, thank you for directing me to it.

I ordered a few DVD's and am hoping for the subtitles -
I also picked up some audio books in Dutch that I have the English books of, which I thought I could read along with and get some good practice with listening, plus the occaisonal word learned here and there.

Another thing I was wondering is has anyone from the US, or any other country for that matter, ordered from Marktplaats? I saw some learning books for really good deals on there, but I couldn't see whether the user shipped out of country.. do they not? Or can someone tell me where I can see where it says so?

Again, many thanks, you're all very helpful :)

Marktplaats is a website where everyone can sell whatever they want to get rid of. It's not a real shop. So if you see something there you'd like to buy, you'd best contact the seller by e-mail and ask them if they mind sending it to the US. Since they have to send it somewhere anyway, I don't think most people would mind to send it far away, as long as you pay the shipping costs.

hi all, I know this was posted a long time ago but I do need your help. you seem to know a lot about DVD region.could someone give me some advice? I also have a problem about my DVD region code. I bought a DVD in U.S, after I went backback to Australia,I found that my DVD did not work on my player. I bought this program (http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/ti ... 2-dvd.html)from a giveway which claims to remove region code. I convert mine from region code 1 to region code 4, but still not compatible with my DVD player. It just keeps reading.
I tried HandBrake but it wouldn't decode any encrypted DVDs, it requires an add-on named libdvdcss. any idea will be appreciated, please

As far as I know, region codes can't be changed on a DVD. It's code is static and can't be changed. You can however try to change the code of your player, but be careful: most players only allow that change very few times (<5)

You can always try to rip it on some computer running Linux: they can't read the encryption, so they won't be bothered by it.
