Server problem!

Post by Bieneke » Tue Jan 27, 2009 6:23 pm

Hallo allemaal,

The forum is experiencing a serious problem, or to be more precise: The forum is causing a serious problem to the shared server on which it is hosted. The technical staff of the webhosting service may disable the forum when the server load gets too high. If this happens, you will see the following message:
The forum is temporarily down due to a technical issue

If you see this message, the company that hosts this website has temporarily disabled the forum. They have noticed an unusually high load on the server, which is caused by this forum.

Apparently, we are in the top 1% of best visited sites on the shared server of the webhost. In January, there were 800,000 page requests on this site. This is, of course, a good thing, but when the load gets too high, other websites on the same server suffer time-outs. This is why the webhost decided to disable the Dutch Grammar Forum.

I am currently looking for a solution, but unfortunately, I am very busy this week - I am (physically ;-)) moving to another place. I am hoping to fix this problem as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, you can always reach me via the contact form.

Technical details

Well, I cannot give you many details yet as I know very little at this point. The high number of page requests (not unique visitors, but the number of clicks on this forum) is not the sole reason for the high server load. This forum must use certain scripts that are very heavy . In combination with a high amount of page requests (and, thus, script requests), today, this website was responsible for 30% of the server load on a shared server.

I will see if the Phpbb community can offer any advice on this matter. If you are phpbb-savvy yourself, you are most welcome to contact me!

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Update

With the help of the guy who is monitoring the long log files on the server, I learned that the high load is caused by our chatbox (Kwebbelhoekje) - the script is apparently very heavy. This is quite ironical as we do not even use it that often. Unfortunately, this means that I will have to disable the chatbox. :(

There are lighter chatboxes and shoutboxes available (Java applets or Flash) but they are not accessible to people who use screenreaders (at least, that was the case the last time I checked). I hope someone has meanwhile figured out a way to make Java or Flash chatboxes that are in fact accessible. If you know a good Java/Flash shoutbox/chatbox, do contact me.

In the meantime, we can continue chatting on MSN, Skype, etc. I will list my MSN in my profile.

Oh, how sad! I will miss the Kwebbelhoekje.

Thanks for looking into this while you're so busy, Bieneke.

Move to IRC! It would really surprise me if there weren't any IRC-client which could be used by our screenreader-users..

What about the old chatbox we had before? If we could get that back, it would be better than nothing!

That may be a great solution. It is easy to integrate (we had an IRC chatbox a long time ago, only very briefly) and I think there are no accessibility issues. Thanks, Grytolle :)

I guess we have to put more effort into advertising our Kwebbelhoekje.

IRC is great because there are clients like mIRC that are accessible and there are java interfaces for websites so we can link to an IRC channel from the forum/website. :D

Nog even geduld, dus. ;)

Hoi Sue,

Ik probeerde een PM aan jou sturen, maar ik ben niet zeker als het door was gegaan.

Hi all,

We have a new Kwebbelhoekje. See viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2355&p=14642#p14642.

Groetjes,

Bieneke

P.S. While I was writing this post, the forum experienced a database error. It is beginning to look like this forum is jinxed! I left a message on my web host's voicemail and the problem has been solved. I still don't know what the problem was - let's hope it is not going to happen again. :?
