Dutch swearing

I think "fok" is indeed about as bad as "fuck", but that's because it's the same word. "Fok" as a swear word has nothing to do with the Dutch word "fokken", it's simply a Dutch-ified variation of "fuck".

Saying the F-word isn't that uncommon (at least not in the places I have been/lived in Belgium), but it doesn't sound at all as obscene to Belgians/Dutchmen as it does to you, just because it isn't a Dutch word. If someone went around and said 'neuk' the whole time, I would be shocked too.

I've also seen 'fok' used as a swear word (presumably by analogy with 'fuck'). I'm curious--does that have a somewhat weaker profanity connotation than the borrowed 'fuck', or are they exactly synonymous?

Um, not sure specifically for Dutch, but I think you can ... cos it's normal to adjust the written spelling of the F-word when you use it as a swearword in another lang, Balkan langs do that.
It's not hardcore evidence that you can do it in Dutch spoken in Europe, but SA Dutch is a bit like that ... it's been in an interview with a South African rapper ... he's an Afrikaner and of course even his rap-star-pose demands he swears and curses alot ... he nonstop repeated that ''drunk ppl are ill as fok and say crazy shit''--> from which he borrows ideas for his lyrics, etc.
