CODE, Delft method, .... how to use them ?

Hi,
I've learnt my 1st Dutch course in U.Nijmegen, with the book named CODE 1. That emphasizes the daily interaction, with Video, Daily conversations. Then I've got my A1 niveau.

Now, I'm following the B1 niveau (skipped the A2 niveau) with UvA (Roeterstraat Amsterdam), where they use the book named Delftse Method: Tweede Ronde. There is almost no emphasis on daily conversation, but alot of effort to help the learners to learn as many new words as possible.

So, given my main aim to learn Dutch is to understand what my colleagues speaking in the office (I'm in an IT company), how can I take the best out of both the two methods: CODE and DELFTSE METHOD ?

Because you take part in a course, you better continue.
At the same time you can try to study from the cd-rom of code 2 - which should be the same level as the course that you are taking part in.
I consider the Delftse Methode as extremely dull and non-practical - but if you can handle these two negative sides - of course you can learn many words.

So, the first negative view towards the Delftse Method. Anyone else having the same/opposite view?

My experience with the Delftse methode is that the texts are quite boring and asume that you come from some retarded, far away country. In addition, word translations are usually extremely context dependend so that you often learn strange meanings for words that have an other, far more common, meaning.
They also don't explain too much grammar, but hey, there is dutchgrammar.com to fill that gap.

But you do learn a lot of words in a short time and you get al lot of information about the Netherlands at the same time, so it's not totally useless.

Note that I'm Dutch, so I didn't use the method myself. But I saw it from some of my foreign colleagues.

Yes, vocabulary is the best strength of the Delftse method.
Anyway, I using this method, and have to live with it for a while.

It lacks the focus on conversation, and I will find some Dutch Speaking community to practice on this lack.

Now, after finishing the course using the DelftseMethod, Tweede Ronde (at U.v.Amsterdam), I would say that I agree: this is a very impractical material.

CODE 1, while being compared to DelftseMethod, Tweede Ronde, helps me much better in using Dutch in my daily life.

On the other hand, Tweede Ronde helps me to gain a great deal of knowledge about vocabulary. It is from this method that I have the following rule:

"Whenever you cannot find a root of a Dutch word in either English or French, then 99% that word roots in German"

Hi,
well in my opinion I found the Groene boek (delfse methode A1-A2 level) quite boring but yes great for vocabulary.
I am currently using the Code 2 book and find that much more interactive and more fun. Yes sometimes I find learnign dutch is fun. othertimes I go crazy...

I hope to complete the Code 3 as well to be able to complete the Staatsexamen II but the gemeente only allows one year of study and I am following a class that goes slow. Any one know of a way to get around this?

Hi

Of course you can try to get a course or take lessons independently from the 'gemeente'.
The costs might be a problem though.
A good school/teacher will cost money.
The current problem is that the gemeente gives a lot of course-possibilities, but hardly they are interested what are the goals of the students.
So: they give something for free, but the free course is not always (...) in interest of the immigrant/student.

I am taking the UvA class in Roetersstraat, the green book second level stuff and while the text seems dry, the workbook and such really seem to be good at getting sentences structure into my head. Our instructor is also really good with speaking practice in class, and grammar tips. I find of all the dutch materials, delft method and the red routledge grammar books and big guide are the best by far. It does depend on ones goals, and learning methods, and I am staying with family and getting lots of time to use my newfound skills in real life, where vocabulary is what I need most of right now!

i will likely bring back the twee rounde set with me when i go home. I'm not actually studying with the specific goal of NT2 but it would be useful. I have lots of family here and visit a lot.
