Recommendations and opinions of books, dictionaries, programs, movies, shows, comedy, video players (region issues), music, websites, courses, where to buy Dutch stuff if you don't live there, etc.

Hi,
I am Dutch and currently live in Liverpool, England. My wife and I are expecting our first child, and I I would love the little nipper to be fluent in Dutch. The chance of that happening would increase massively if my wife spoke Dutch as well, which means I will need to teach her. I used to study English at uni, so have some experience with grammar etc, but I have never taught Dutch as a second language. Can anyone recommend a good book/teaching package for home teaching beginner's Dutch?
All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi
If you want to teach your partner it is better to leave this task to somebody else. Find a professional teacher. You better concentrate on your relationship. If you need to fix your car you also ask some specialist I guess. If you want to teach your child Dutch - please speak Dutch, read some books every night- and send him/her to a school where the child receives professional teaching. Do not experiense too much yourself. There are professionals everywhere. Enjoy your relationship and your child!

There's this chick I go to inburgering curses with, she speaks Chinese to the kids, husband speaks Dutch to the lil rugrats. They are perfectly fluent in both.
Then there's pple we all know like Jenifer Lopez, perfectly bilingual in Spanish & English, Marc Anthony, Clegg the Dutch-British guy running for parliament in England.
It sure can be done, I see bilingual pple daily, your wife doesn't need to speak a word of Dutch, YOU & ONLY YOU need to speak Dutch ONLY to your kid.
If you insist on your wife speaking Dutch, I suggest she starts with Rosetta Stone, the online course. That's what I started with & she can build up from there & you don't have to coach her along as it's pretty self explanatory. She will learn from pics, assuming she has full use of her sight LOL!
Good luck & let us know how it goes!

Hi, if you want your wife to learn how to speak dutch, surf online. There are so many websites that offers this course ( that's where I started). My husband is also dutch but we never live in Holland. Only for short stay til 4months. We live here and there. So, encourage your wife to learn online , with books of course. There are sites that offers from beginners to moderate. Her big advantage...YOU She has the walking dictionary beside her ... and for free. And then she can go for oefenexamen available online to test her newly acquired skills of understanding and speaking dutch. it's a lot better (of course ) if she also has the chance to communicate with other dutch pple. Like go shopping and bringing your kid to the park and she has the chance to talk with dutch moms. I experienced all of those and it's a lot lot easier. Only to forget some because now we're living in Arabic speaking country And I have the schedule for naturalization last week of this month (without going to a language course or private teacher) I pray to God I can make it. So , you see your wife can learn dutch, especially because she has YOU ( at least she doesn't need to take inburgering or naturalization exam ) btw, ons dochtertje spreek(t) beter nederlands dan ik maar haar moedertaal is engels.

Look again. Windmill deleted his/her own post, then wrote it again (by the way, windmill: you can just edit your post, you know). Yours is still there, above it.
