sparen???

[woordenschat]
How do you say daddy-long-legs in Dutch? How many ways are there to say "thank you" or "you're welcome"? Post everything about vocabulary here.

I was told that sparen means both, to scare and to spare, but so far no proof for that in dictionaries :?
Can you tell me? Dank je wel!

Told by an untrustworthy source, apparently. :P Or you misunderstood them.

"Sparen" does indeed mean to spare in the meaning of "sparing someone's life". In phrases like "Spare me your excuses", you'll use "besparen" instead in Dutch. The other, more frequent, meaning is to save (money).

Staren is to stare. For "to scare" one would usually use a construction of more than one word in Dutch, "bang maken" being the most common.

Thx, I've met both expressions when researching what went wrong with the original one ;)
