Hi,

Hello. My name is V. I have always wanted to learn a new language, so I chose to try to teach myself Dutch through this online service. I chose Dutch because I believe it to be very close to my mother language, not saying that learning Dutch will be easy, but I didn’t want to start off with a language like Mandarin or something like that. I want to sort of "build my way up" to the more difficult languages. Once I learn a second language, I will definitely move on to a third.

I don't really think that I clearly fit into one category or another. I do have Dutch-speaking parents, but they seldom speak the language anymore, having lived in Canada for decades, and they didn't really spend much time trying to teach their kids the language. As my father retained his Dutch nationality throughout his life, that means that I was recently able to acquire a Dutch passport though. Put me down as in part interested in connected back to the family history, but probably more in the category of thinking it rather silly not to be able to fluently speak the primary language of a country that I'm a national of. I'm also looking at trying to relocate to Europe once I finish my doctorate (with that degree hopefully being finished by the end of the year). So far I've been working on building up on my vocabulary via MemRise - soon I need to start working a lot more on my grasp of the grammar in order to be able to put that into coherent sentences.

The right word order is: "Ik hou van jou."

Well, Hello there. I am trying to teach myself dutch using this website and the resources it provides mostly because of a dutch tv show called GTST - Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden. While watching it I kind of fell madly in love with one of the cast members, namely Ferry Doedens (I think we all had some weird crushes throughout our lives), which I'd really like to meet one day (no stalker! promise). Besides the tv series, I also enjoy listening to Epica and Within Temptation , two of my favourite bands of all time, which also come from Holland. Even though my mother language shares the same roots with the neolatin languages (italian, french, spanish, portuguese), I had the luck to learn German and English since kindergarten, therefore I don't expect the learning process to be a complete pain in the b$%#
To know him, is to love him.

Good luck to you Kaeden,
Knowing some English and German will certainly be helpful, although you may find out Dutch has a few oddities of its own. Things like "er" e.g. and it combinations like ervoor, ertegen etc. Yes, English and German have some of that but they are not as intensively used as in Dutch. If you know German syntax that will be a great help. Many people struggle with word order.

Thank you very much. What I find the most difficult is the pronunciation, but I'm using wikipedia for reading out loud in dutch while hearing and following the pronunciation rules presented here. Hopefully I will be able to speak dutch without having a sore throat after each sentence

So, why Dutch?
A few years ago I had a Dutch boyfriend for a short period of time and we wanted to learn each others' mothertongue in order to be able to communicate with the other one's family and so on. It was not a very serious attempt though and I didn't like the language much back then. However, there was some point in my life when I thought about what language I should learn next, because I'd love to work as a translator after my studies and then it's useful to know several languages. But of course learning languages takes a lot of time and since I already study two languages at university, my time is limited. Since Dutch is similar to German in many ways, I thought Dutch would be an easy language for me to learn as a German speaker. Yeah, so that's how I decided to enroll in a Dutch course at university and it went very well. In addition, I learned to really like the Dutch language and I want to become as good as possible. : )

Hallo allemaal! Ik wil Nederlands leren, want ik woon in Vlaanderen. I live in Belgium since about 2 years now and my plan is to stay here for quite a long period. Most of the italians here cannot speak Dutch at all after many years and they lived all their lives as foreigners! I don't want to! I would like to integrate, read the newspaper or discuss about politics... All the small things to which I was used to in Italy and that I miss a lot. So I think this is the way! That's it =)

Hallo ingframin,
Ik vind het leuk dat je graag wilt worden geïntegreerd. Als ik jou was, zou ik eerst in het Nederlands proberen te schrijven. Je kunt je zinnetjes vertalen van Engels naar Nederlands. Zoals, "I live in Belgium since about 2 years now and my plan is to stay here for quite a long period." → "Nu woon ik sinds ongeveer twee jaar in België, en ik ben van plan om een redelijk lange periode hier te verblijven."
Groetjes, Bert
