How do you say daddy-long-legs in Dutch? How many ways are there to say "thank you" or "you're welcome"? Post everything about vocabulary here.

Prefixes

Hi!

I'm new here so I started the lessons in the suggested order... I just arrived to the prefixes and suffixes, and found out that there are 6 prefixes, but the lesson doesn't say what do they stand for... I'd be very happy if any person could help me :)

Thanks so much!!

It would help if you included a link to where you saw that, because it is not clear what you mean by this. There are far more than 6 prefixes in Dutch, but e.g. the inseparable prefixes of the verbs are fairly limited in number. I have no idea if that is what you mean though.

Yeah, the reason why they aren't explained or translated there is that that chapter is only about spelling and pronunciation, not about the meaning... but if you insist, we discussed some of the meanings here.

And obviously those aren't the only possible prefixes, but they are the ones that always form a separate syllable.

Hmm, that page also contains an error. The word "egoïstisch" is not hyphenated as e-go-is-tisch but as ego-is-tisch see http://woordenlijst.org/zoek/?q=ego%C3%AFstisch&w=w

I don't agree. "Ego" is clearly two syllables. If it is not hyphenated on the woordenlijst, this is probably because one is not supposed to put an end-of-line hyphenation after a singloe letter; the syllable break is definitely there.
