Question about pronunciation of ons and onze.

[spelling en uitspraak]
How do you pronounce 'gezellig'? What is the difference between 'eu' and 'ui'? How do you write...? You can use the phonetic keyboard if you are familiar with phonetic symbols.

Question about pronunciation of ons and onze.

Postby EetSmakelijk » March 4th, 2006, 5:43 am

Hallo. Ik heb een vraag about the pronunciation of the words ons and onze.
I was listening to a Dutch learning audio and I heard the word "onze". My question is that the lady pronounced the n like n in French "garįon. Is it supposed to be like that, or can the n also sound like the n in the Dutch word "nieuw". Are both sounds for n correct? I am also wondering if there is a difference between Dutch and Flemish and also whether or not other words have this kind of n sound like in "garįon.
Dank jullie wel in advance.
Groetjes,

Hallo EetSmakelijk,

You're right, in some cases the n in a word like onze may sound like the French n in garçon. The following z can cause a kind of nasalization in the sound, so it will never happen to an n at the end of a word. In my opinion both ways of pronunciation are correct.

Met vriendelijke groeten,

Wim

:) Dank je wel, Wim. I got very curious about that and I love trying to understand pronunciation. ;) Which version of the n do you like best? I would have said I liked the regular n better, but now I think the nasal n sounds cool too.

ik zou nooit de n van garįon gebruiken bij de uitspraak van het woord 'onze'. Ik vind dat het dan meer op het Franse telwoord gaat lijken, dan op de Nederlandse bezittelijke vorm van 'ons'. Maar dat is dan weer een persoonlijke mening :D

I would say both are okay, but I prefer the 'n' as in 'nieuw'. The more nasal-n makes it sound a bit strange, like a dialect, there are people that talk that way, but not many, I think.

I pronounce the n in 'onze' like in 'nieuw' too. :)
