Killing Aphids - Another Reason to Learn Dutch

As an American, I am frequently mocked for trying to learn Dutch, since all Dutch people speak excellent English. Well, hahaha to the mockers! : D

I just recently moved to the country of Qatar (as many of you forum members know).

Sadly, a lovely flowering bush in my new yard is totally infested with aphids. After much searching in the plant stores, I finally found the only brand of aphid spray available in this country. ALL of the instructions are in Dutch! So I am about the only person in town who understands what "Na gebruik zorgvuldig handen wassen" means. Bwahahaha!

Oh -- and the Chinese cabbage I bought at the grocery came with a lovely recipe for "Chinese kool met walnoten en spek" (which sounds wonderful except for the part where spek is illegal in this country......

Spek is 'bacon'. Het is waarschijnlijk onwettig omdat Qatar is een moslimland. Ik denk dat varkens heilig zijn.

Heilig? Nee, juist niet - varkens zijn vies volgens de Islam, en mogen daarom niet gegeten worden.

Ja, Quetzal is correct. Spek en alles delen van varkensvlees verboden zijn. (Bacon and all parts from pork are forbidden.)

Maar er zijn veel andere heerlijk eten(s?) hier. Ik vind het eten hier erg lekker.

(Hoewel ik wil graag een beetje stukje het spek......)

Guess what? It has happened again. Dutch is turning into a very useful language for me to be learning!! : D

My husband and I are having Nasi Goreng for lunch. The zakje of seasoning mix came with complete instructions --- in Dutch and Arabic. Hehe. No Engels at all.

Maar ik was able to puzzle it out (except we had to substitute turkey bacon and chicken breasts for the ontbijtspek en ongezouten varkensvlees). Mmmmm. Lekker!

I'd never have guessed there'd be so much Dutch in Qatar! I wonder why.
