Amerikaanse is a female american.
Also I read "de Amerikaanse president"
Does it has to do with a gender? :)

Amerikaan (masculine) and Amerikaanse (feminine) are nouns, meaning American:
- She is an American.
- Zij is een Amerikaanse.

"Amerikaans(e)" is also an adjective, meaning American. Compare:
- The American president and the president is American.
- De Amerikaanse president en de president is een Amerikaan.
