Rosetta Stone

Post by Dave46 »

Hi all,

I am a beginner Dutch learner. I'm only using Rosetta Stone right now (it was provided for free by my employer). Unlike this website, there is very very little focus on grammar. When it does come up, it is in long, confusing, poorly written, poorly laid-out text blocks like this:

As usual, Rosetta Stone's grammar lesson left me feeling hopelessly lost. I just can't follow it (or trust it, since I have found mistakes in their grammar lessons before). I went here, hoping to get a clearer picture:

These lessons are so so different. I am really lost :(. Can an experienced Dutch speaker look at the Rosetta Stone lesson and tell me if it is good or bad?

Dave.

I looked at Rosetta Stone a lot when I was working on a degree in language teaching.

In my opinion, it is of value ONLY for learning vocabulary (and not even that in some languages).

And Anki (http://AnkiSRS.net) is at least as good as Rosetta Stone for learning vocabulary.

Thanks for flagging this up. Been experimenting for a few days and I'm pleased so far.

Anki can do more than many people get out of it. For Dutch, I have four card types. One plays only the audio to train my aural recognition. Another shows the item in print to train my understanding/translation/spelling. Another shows the English to check my ability to produce the sound. And finally one to check my spelling.

I create the notes myself, too, which probably helps learning better than downloading someone else's creation.

I also put in whole sentences and phrases, not only single words.
