PM Spam :(

Post by Bieneke »

Hi all,

A member called 'needneed' sent out a spam message to several members. The forum has not been hacked; the person just took the trouble to send out the same message to individual members of this forum (and judging by the forum logs, that took him/her quite a bit of time :? ).

Anyway: if you received the following message, just ignore it. The member 'needneed' has meanwhile been banned from the forum.
needneed wrote:email me at [email address removed]

Dear friend,

My name is Staff Sgt Gary Marcum ; I am an American soldier, serving in the military with the army’s 3rd infantry division. With a very desperate need for assistance, I have summed up courage to contact you. I regret this informal way of contacting you which I believe would be most effective with regards to the Message I intend to bring to your notice. It is imperative that I adopt this means of communication to safeguard my interest and guarantee that secrecy is not compromised.

I found your contact particulars in an address journal. I am seeking your kind assistance to move the sum of US$8m (eight million United States
dollars) to you in United States; as far as I can be assured that my share will be safe in your care until I complete my service here.

Source of money:

Some money in US dollars were discovered in dog kennels at a farm house and guest houses in an estate near one of Saddam’s old palaces in Baghdad, Iraq during an operation, and it was agreed by Staff Sgt. Kenneth Buff, Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Van Ess and I that some part of this money be shared amongst us before informing anybody about it. Since both of them saw the money first, they did the informing, while I played the outsider to protect our interest. This was quite an illegal thing to do, but I tell you what? No compensation can make up for the risk we have taken with our lives in this hell hole, in which my brother in-law was killed by a road side bomb last time. You will find the story of this money on the web addresses below:

[urls removed]

The above figure was given to me as my share, and to conceal this kind of money became a problem for me, even after the initial probe of all soldiers of our command which I was cleared from; so with the help of a British contact working here and his office enjoy some immunity, I was able to get the package out to a safe location entirely out of trouble spot. He does not know the real contents of the package, and believes that it belongs to a British/American medical doctor who died in a raid here in Iraq, and before giving up, trusted me to hand over the package to his family in United States. I have now found a much secured way of getting the package out of Iraq to the country for you to pick up, and I will discuss this with you when I am sure that you are willing to assist me, and I believe that my money will be well secured in your hand because you have the fear of God.

I want you to tell me how much you will take from this money for the assistance you will give to me. One passionate appeal I will make to you is not to discuss this matter with anybody, should you have reasons to reject this offer, please and please destroy this message as any leakage of this information will be too bad for us soldier’s here in Iraq and tarnish the reputation of other services men. I do not know how long we will remain here, and I have been shot, wounded and survived two suicide bomb attacks by the special grace of God, this and other reasons I will mention later has prompted me to reach out for help, I honestly want this matter to be resolved immediately, please contact me as soon as possible with my non-service private email address which is for now my only way of communication until I specify otherwise –email me at email me at [email address removed].

God bless you and your family.

SSG.Gary Marcum
3rd Infantry Division

Hmm how annoying.. :(

I've heard of this happening on several Spanish forums as well, people were being warned for those kinds of mails & pms.

Let's hope it will be just a one-off...

More PM spam

Post by Bieneke »

Hello all,

We have had one of those spammers again; someone with enough time to send out spam messages to each member individually by pm. :-?

If you received the following message, please ignore it.
worship wrote:Dear Child of God.
Calvary greetings in the name of our lord and personal saviour amen.
My name is Mrs Judith BIK ,from Cote D' Ivoire .I am married to late Mr Ronie BIK, who worked as a senior manager with the Ivory Coast refinary for Twenty-Six years before he died in the year 2005,after a brief illness that lasted for only five days.
We were married for Eighteen years with a son (Roger) who later died in a motor accident. Before the untimely death of my husband,we were both born again Christians. Since after his death I decided not to remarry due to often ill health . When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of one Million, three hundred Thousand United States Dollars (US$1.3m) in a General Trust Account with a prime bank in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire. Presently, this money is still with the bank.
Recently,Following my ill health, my Doctor told me that I may not last long due to my cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness.Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to someone that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein, according to the desire of my late husband before his death.
I want this fund to be used in Christain Activities like,Orphanages, Christain schools, and Churches for propagating the word of God and to endeavor that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that "Blessed is the hand that giveth". I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's efforts to be used by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision.
I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that "the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace". I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband's relatives around me always.I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible.
As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the bank in Abidjan. I will also issue you the documents that will prove you the present beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the Church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and
Truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life.
Contact via this email account (obscured) me as any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another person for this same purpose.
Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply.
Remain blessed in the Lord.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs Judith BIK.

Stelle123 (and after he/she had been removed: Rose123) has been spamming hundreds of members with private messages. Are you one of those lucky people to be invited for a chat by Stella123? My advice: ignore him/her.

I think we had a pm-spammer again; or maybe somebody really wants to be my friend...
Anyway, if you too got a message from Fatou002, telling you that he/she wants to be friends with you, please ignore it.

Dear Bieneke,

How can I opt out of being available for private messages?

Groetjes
Bert

PS. I think there's no need for a PM service in a language forum because learning a language is not a particularly intimate area of our lives, i.e. if you have any questions you can ask them openly. There are lots of other forums on the internet where you can build personal relationships if you will. Unsolicited messages and computer viruses can be very annoying.
