and

Hij beweerde te weten waar het allemal om ging.

The second sentence is better. Here's the Dutch explanation: https://taaladvies.net/aaneenschrijven- ... -algemeen/. In short in English: a combination of 'er', 'daar', 'waar', etc. + preposition will be written together if possible. In your sentence it's split because of 'het allemaal'. It's quite complicated, maybe this section of Dutch Grammar can help you too: https://www.dutchgrammar.com/en/?n=Pronouns.ad02 (in English).

Note: it's 'allemaal' (with double 'a') and not 'allemal'
